October 21, 2006Get Organized for an Allergy-free Home What does clutter have to do with allergies?Did you know that that surfaces of clutter collect allergy-forming dust mites? There are many things we can do to prevent allergies by just dealing with the things that trigger them. And clutter is one of those things that collect dust. There are other things about being disorganized that trigger those allergy-forming dust mites... Tightly crammed clothes in closets don't allow enough ventilation. And poor ventilation is another thing that will lead to dust mite allergens. Even clothes left out will collect dust, so they should be kept in closed closets and drawers. Having minimal furniture and items around will help because it provides minimal surfaces on which dust mites can settle. And using sofa and pillow covers are better because they can be washed frequently. These are just some ways to achieving an allergy-free home. It aligns with being organized and clutter-free, making it an important step to our health, as well as our well-being. October 11, 2006October 10, 2006When to toss that foodThe shelf life for foods According to BusinessWeek Online, "It's a very inexact science since those dates include a wide margin of safety." Well, so when should we toss our food? In the article "The Truth About Food Expiration Dates," it defines what the dates mean on grocery products. The date stamp "Use by" is like an expiration date and should not be consumed after that date. There is also the "Best if used by" date which "refers to a quality or flavor of the food." If you see "Sell by" don't buy it after the date stamped -- it informs the store how long a product can be displayed for sale. Here's a warning though: "the refrigerator at home usually isn't cool enough to keep meat fresh for more than two days." Therefore, after two days from purchase, eat or freeze it. Check out the article for the Guide to Shelf Life. We keep food in our refrigerators way too long, in many cases, and it would be a good idea to develop the habit of purging food on a regular basis (every couple days even). END NOTE: The article was very informative and had good advice. I did NOT agree with the warning on drinking raw milk however. Research and thousands of people drinking raw milk proved that raw milk is safe (not to mention healthier than anything pasteruized). It's when the raw foods are heated that the bacterias become harmful to our bodies, and unheated those same bacterias help our bodies. RELATED COMMENTARY: Jurassic Fridge - The Lost Food World October 06, 2006Re-Gifting is in vogueAmericans admit their re-gifting ways I don't think many of my clients were surveyed because, when I see the clutter of gifts they keep but don't need or want, I know they are NOT among the re-gifters! However, I do know many of us do offer a gift we don't want and give it to someone else as a gift. Sometimes, it's because we don't have time to shop for a gift (or lazy to go out and purchase a new gift), but usually it's because it's more suitable for someone else. The "re" in re-gifting goes along with the "re" in recycling. How 'bout that! Better than having gifts create clutter, I say! September 20, 2006Organize Your ArtToo many art treasures? In an article "Unconventional Ways To Display Artwork" the author suggests various ways and places to hang art. "To find these little-used spots, start by looking up. There is so much space above eye level screaming to be covered. The 10-foot ceilings in my historic home give me ample room above windows and doorways to hang a set of botanical prints. Or, why not create a cluster of artwork that crawls up the wall and over a door, like a wandering vine?"The author also suggests ways to "look in," "look around," and "look out" in finding unique spots for your art. Very clever ideas! September 13, 2006Contest for Most OrganizedFall contest for the most organized! Check out the new Fall contest at Organized-Living.com.
