An Organizing Project

By Cyndi Seidler

Achieving our organizing goals are determined by a plan of attack, a strategy. It is not enough to set out to do something without planning a way in which it will be carried out. This is the missing first step to reaching a goal.

Once you know where you want to go and what you’ll need to do to get there, the next thing to do is to perform the various tasks in a systemized process of sorting and arranging things into various created and/or designated places.

Allocating time for this kind of project ensures that it gets done in a reasonable amount of time. This takes your strategy and puts it into action. All the planning and goal-setting doesn’t do a bit of good if it isn’t put into practice.

In preparing to go into action, you’ll need to determine what organizing tools will be needed to provide "homes" for various items. Sufficient preparation is very important to the flow of the project. Establish what you’ll be working on at a given time. By managing the various tasks of your project, the work is performed with expected results. You’ll be in control of your efforts and your time.

Start with one area or section. Begin sorting through the items, one by one, and make decisions on whether to 1) Keep it, 2) Store it, 3) Get rid of it. If you’re keeping it, give it a home (a place to live or reside in). If you’re storing it, put it in the designated storage place. If you’re getting rid of it, box it up for charity or just throw it away.

Tackle one area at a time and soon the project is complete!
