Getting To The Goal Line

By Cyndi Seidler

Writing a plan is an administrative function that cannot be avoided if one were to organize any activity to success. A plan is strategy in which determines how you'll go about achieving a goal. This follows with a program that outlines the steps that will be necessary to carry out the plan. The program is then divided into a series of projects to carry out a program step. And, projects may have various tasks to carry out.

We can look at this on a hierarchy structure that has the goal at the top and underneath that goal is a program and below that are projects. By carrying out all the projects of a program the goal will be achieved.

Let's look at this with a scaled-down example. An executive wants to increase efficiency and production in his organization or department (goal). His strategy is to get all staff in his area organized that they are operating at full opacity (plan). One of the things he feels would accomplish this is to establish and implement an enterprise-wide filing system so that information is stored, retrieved, and shared easily and efficiently (a program step). He decides that a Professional Organizer should handle the project so that his staff aren't deviated from their normal production activities (a project to implement the program step). The Professional Organizer then carries out the various tasks of the project.

Each program step is then carried out with targeted deadlines for completion toward the overall program. The results of the completed program should show the executive at the goal line with "Mission accomplished" written all over the place!

A structured, well-planned activity does bring about success. Sometimes, it takes persistence and the ability to conquer obstacles that try to block us from getting to the goal line. Treat it like a game. Establish game plan's rules from the start so that you'll know what to do when a situation arises.
